Walruses

In certain alternate realities, odobenus sapiens rule supreme. After humanity died out, these strong and social creatures rose to the occasion. Humanity had left behind all its knowledge, all its creations, all its accomplishments, so when the walruses first stood up on two legs and asked themselves why they were, there was already a civilization waiting for them to fill it.

As very intelligent critters, the walruses puzzled out the languages and devices left behind by man. They grasped the principles behind the amazing devices, and could soon take flight and explore the rest of human space. It was not long before they far surpassed their long gone teachers.

Walruses are big and blubbery, and have long tusks growing from their mouths. Your standing in the walrus society is measured by the length of your tusks and the size of your body. The bigger, the better. They are strong and intelligent, but lack speed and dexterity. They enjoy cold climates, and keep their ships refrigerated to match their native polar temperatures. Their ships and habitats are usually filed with water for them to swim in.

They are very gregarious and enjoy social interaction, but are also easily offended. Luckily, they don’t know how to hold a grudge. They are friendly and wise, and should be easy to make friends with, as long as you don’t insult them.

Maximum Stats:
Agility 5
Dexterity 4
Strength 7
Perception 7
Intelligence 8
Willpower 5
Special Abilities:
Awareness 1, Empathy 1, Swim 1. Walruses are semi-aquatic, and spend as much time in water as they do on dry land.
Drawback:
Walruses require a cold temperature to function, any temperature over 10°C (50°F) and they become sluggish and take -3 to any Skill Check. At 15°C (59°F) they overheat, and take 1 Wound Level every period of game time equal to their STR in minutes.

While researching walruses, I was fortunate enough to come across a drawing of a walrus, one that pretty much perfectly captured my vision of them. Apart from the clothes it was wearing. It can be found on the website Greywolf.Critter.Net, which also contains many other pretty pictures. Navigation is a bit confusing though, and I have found no search function, or indeed any showcaseing of individual pictures, so here is a link directly to the image.

To be as clear as possible; Jordan Peacock, which appears to be Greywolfs real name, has no affiliation with me or my walruses, and most likely doesn’t even know I’m linking to him.

  1. […] Well, as there is only one day left of school, it looks like we will not get to play the final Red Dwarf adventure that I wrote. I’m declassifying some of my notes, and may soon put up the adventure scenario, event though it is untested. For now, you can have a look at my glorious odobenus sapiens, evolved walruses. […]
