Pete Abrams just blew my mind. I sat staring at the screen, shocked. Some people might have seen this coming, but I certainly didn’t.
If you have never read Sluggy Freelance, click this link and get started right away. Today is worth nothing without the buildup.
Don’t read beyond the cut until you’re finished.
Pete Abrams just blew my mind. Reading today’s comic was very much a “Holy crap!” moment. Two Bun-Buns! Blacksoul was Bun-Bun all along!
Apparently, there has been a lot of negative reactions to Oceans Unmoving, Pete even posted an apology for not getting it to flow the way he wanted to, but I’m one of those who have enjoyed it from the beginning. Possibly because I’m also one of those who really like Bun-Bun, and who has missed him since the end of the Holiday Wars. After today, I’ve seen people apologise for doubting, this strip just redeemed the story for them. As far as I’m concerned the story needed no redeeming, I’m left with “Holy crap!”
I personally try to avoid story speculation, I like to be surprised, but even I have picked up on many, many people speculating that the Bun-Bun we were following in Oceans Unmoving was actually the past Bun-Bun, from before his first appearance. I didn’t like that theory. I wanted it to be wrong. I didn’t care much about the story of old Bun-Bun, I wanted to know what happened to the Bun-Bun we last saw falling out of the Halls of Time. I wanted to know what he would do next, partly because I felt sure that if this was the story of the past Bun-Bun, we would be leaving him behind again as soon as it ended. I wanted it to be the story of the present Bun-Bun.
And what do we learn today? It’s both.
Pete Abrams is a genius.
Holy crap.
